Understanding Lease Terminology
Money Factor
The lease equivalent of an interest rate. To convert to APR, multiply by 2400. For example, 0.00125 = 3% APR. Lower is better. This is negotiable at some dealers.
Residual Value
The predicted value of the vehicle at lease end, typically expressed as a percentage of MSRP. Higher residual = lower payments because you're paying for less depreciation.
Capitalized Cost (Cap Cost)
The total cost being financed, including vehicle price, fees, and any add-ons. Negotiate this down just like you would a purchase price. "Cap cost reduction" is like a down payment.
Lease Tips
- Negotiate the selling price before discussing the lease
- Ask for the money factor and residual in writing
- Compare the money factor to current advertised rates (check Edmunds)
- Higher residual vehicles (Honda, Toyota, Lexus) lease better
- Be realistic about mileage - excess mileage charges add up fast
